The importance of brushing your teeth before eating

Cleaning your teeth at least an hour before eating will brush off your enamel. So if you want to ensure that acid, sugar or debris is not left in your mouth after a meal, brush your teeth before you have your breakfast and simply drink a glass of water or you can also chew a sugar-free gum in order to restore the dental pH levels of your teeth.

Properly brush your teeth

You can use a manual toothbrush and a standard fluoride which are just effective. Here are some guidelines on how to properly brush your teeth:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes.
  • Systematically brush your teeth, working your way from one corner of your mouth to the other ensuring you brush all the surfaces.
  • Avoid brushing too hard and use just a smear of toothpaste.
  • Spit out what’s left in your mouth and it is recommended not to use any water at all. In order for the fluoride to stay in your mouth longer and continue to work its job.

Inflammation that spreads throughout our body caused by gum and tooth infection is actually bad for our hearts, blood vessels and brains. So in order to live longer, it is important to take care of your teeth. In addition, people who do not smoke are at least 10 times less likely to suffer from gum disease.

One in four individuals regularly suffers from bad breath. Bacteria is the prime culprit of bad breath as well as when our mouth dries out. Natural mouthwash is just as effective as those brought in the stores. You can drink water or eat vegetables which are high in fibre and with high water content such as cucumber, carrots and celeries.


Think of sugar as your enemy

Be aware of hidden acids and sugars and try to change your diet in order to reduce them. Alternatively, you can eat porridge instead of sugary cereals or eat an orange instead of drinking a tall glass of orange juice. Also, instead of a red berry fruit tea which contains a very high concentration of acid, opt to drink peppermint tea. You can also submerge the tooth in milk if you can’t replace it in the cavity which will give you a few hours if you can’t go to your dentist immediately.
